Rabbits

We raise four breeds of rabbits at Saturn Farms, New Zealands, Rex, Blanc de Hotot, and Silver Fox rabbits. We started out with the New Zealands because that was the breed that was initially offered to us when we started raising rabbits. We quickly added Rex when another rabbit breeder sold off his entire stock to us when he decided to get out of rabbits.

The Silver Fox rabbits were a deliberate choice to add to our herd. We found out about Blanc de Hotot and Silver Fox rabbits and how they are a endangered livestock breeds. We sought out Silver Foxes and were able to purchase nine rabbits from a total of five breeders. Finding Blanc de Hotots was more difficult. Initial inquiries to established breeders went unanswered. After a few years I made the comment in a public forum about how difficult it was to acquire Blanc de Hotots. A breeder who raised them saw the comment and contacted me. The outcome of this was the aquisition of a trio of Blanc de Hotot rabbits.

We operate a rabbit processing plant on-site, licensed under New York State's Department of Agriculture Article 5A. This means that we are licensed to process rabbits for human consumption in New York. Since our processing facility is on-site, this means that our rabbits do not have to be trucked to a processing plant, releaving them of the stresses associated with travel. This also means a reduction in food miles as well.

Our rabbits are fed a balanced diet, featuring Pine Creek Farm and Feed's Bunny 16 which is manufactured using grains and hays grown in New York and Ohio. We suppliment, when seasonally appropriate, with local forage plants. No antibiotics or hormones are fed to our rabbits.
